आज 2 अक्टूबर को महात्मा गांधी की जयंती है। वह अपने अंतिम जन्मदिन पर राजधानी के तीस जनवरी मार्ग पर बिड़ला हाउस में थे। उन्होंने उस दिन उपवास, प्रार्थना और अपने चरखे पर अधिक समय बिताकर जन्मदिन मनाया। दरअसल गांधी जी के लिए जन्मदिन सामान्य दिनों की तरह होता था, वह उस दिन भी अपने काम में लगे रहते थे। 1931 में जब वह लंदन में थे, तब उधर बसे भारतीयों ने उनका जन्मदिन मनाया था।

उस दिन, गांधी सोसायटी और इंडियन कांग्रेस लीग ने उन्हें चरखा गिफ्ट में दिया था। इससे पहले 2 अक्टूबर, 1917 को एनी बेसेंट ने बंबई के गोखले हॉल में बापू की तस्वीर का अनावरण किया था। साल 1922, 1923, 1932, 1942 और 1943 में अपने जन्मदिन पर वह जेल में थे। उन्होंने 1942 में जन्मदिन पर आइसक्रीम खाई थी, जेल अधीक्षक ने उन्हें फूलहार भेजे थे। बापू 1924 में जन्मदिन पर उपवास पर थे। यह उपवास हिंदू-मुस्लिम एकता के लिए रखा गया था।

गांधी जी के लिए अंतिम जन्मदिन की तरह अंतिम दिवाली भी नीरस रही थी। वह 12 नवंबर, 1947 को दीपोत्सव वाले दिन दिल्ली में सबसे शांति और सौहार्द बनाए रखने की अपील कर रहे थे। उस दिन उन्हें कुरुक्षेत्र में शरणार्थियों से मिलने के लिए जाना था, पर वह वहां जा नहीं सके थे। उस दिवाली वाले दिन वह बिड़ला हाउस में कुछ लोगों से मिले थे।कौन-कौन मिलने आया था बापू से?

महात्मा गांधी के लिए 2 अक्टूबर, 1947 उनका 78वां जन्म दिन अंतिम साबित हुआ। देश की आजादी के बाद यह उनका पहला जन्मदिन था। गांधी जी से उस दिन मिलने के लिए आने वालों में लॉर्ड माउंटबेटन और लेड़ी माउंटबेटन भी थे। प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू, गृह मंत्री सरदार पटेल, मौलाना आजाद वगैरह भी उनसे मिलने आए थे। उनके साथ छाया की तरह रहने वाले ब्रजकृष्ण चांदीवाला, मनु बहन और उनकी डॉक्टर डॉ. सुशीला नैयर भी बिड़ला हाउस में ही थीं। बापू के कमरे को उनकी सहयोगी मीराबेन ने क्रॉस, ‘हे राम’ और ‘ओम’ शब्दों को लिखकर सजा दिया था। राष्ट्रपिता से पूरे दिन मित्रों और शुभचिंतकों का तांता लगा रहा, जिनमें अन्य देशों के लोग भी शामिल थे। उनमें से कई लोगों ने अपने-अपने देशों के नेताओं की ओर से शुभकामनाएं दीं।

जब मेरे चारों ओर इतनी भीषण आग जल रही हो तो मैं अपना जन्मदिन नहीं मनाना चाहता, इसलिए या तो इस आग को बुझा दो, या प्रार्थना करो कि प्रभु मुझे अपने पास बुला लें,' यही उनका कहना था। उन्होंने आगे कहा, 'जब भारत में इस तरह का बवाल चल रहा हो तो मुझे एक और जन्मदिन मनाने का विचार पसंद नहीं है।' वह 9 सितंबर, 1947 को कोलकाता से दिल्ली आए थे। दिल्ली में तब से दंगे रुकने का नाम ही नहीं ले रहे थे। पहाड़गंज, किशनगंज. करोल बाग, दरियागंज वगैरह में दंगे हो रहे थे, इंसानियत मर रही थी।

जीने की इच्छा खत्म हो गई थी गांधी जी की

गांधी जी से 2 अक्टूबर 1947 को सैकड़ों लोग मिलने आते रहे। गांधी जी ने उस दिन के बारे में लिखा भी है कि ये बधाइयां हैं या कुछ और। एक जमाना था, जब सब मेरी कही हर बात को मानते थे, पर आज हालत यह है कि मेरी बात कोई सुनता तक नहीं है। मैंने अब ज्यादा जीने की इच्छा छोड़ दी है। मैंने कभी कहा था कि मैं सवा सौ साल तक जिंदा रहूं, लेकिन अब मेरी ज्यादा जीने की इच्छा नहीं रही। दिल्ली के उस अशांत माहौल के बावजूद हिन्दू, मुसलमान और सिख उनके पास उस दिन आ रहे थे।

बापू बीच-बीच में यही कह रहे थे कि “भारत सबका है। यहां पर सब साथ-साथ रहेंगे।” उनसे एक विदेशी पत्रकार मिलने आए और पूछने लगे कि आपने कहा था कि आप 125 साल तक जीना चाहते हैं। इसके जवाब में बापू ने कहा कि मैंने अब ज्यादा जीने की इच्छा छोड़ दी है। मैंने कभी कहा था कि सवा सौ साल तक जिंदा रहूं, लेकिन अब मेरी ज्यादा जीने की इच्छा नहीं रही। वह उन दिनों देश के हालत से बेहद उदास थे।

Today, 2nd October is the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He was at Birla House on Tis Jan Marg in the capital on his last birthday. He celebrated his birthday that day by fasting, praying and spending more time at his charkha. Actually, for Gandhiji, his birthday was like a normal day, he was busy in his work even on that day. In 1931, when he was in London, the Indians living there celebrated his birthday.

That day, the Gandhi Society and the Indian Congress League gifted him a charkha. Earlier on October 2, 1917, Annie Besant had unveiled Bapu's portrait at Gokhale Hall, Bombay. He was in jail on his birthday in the years 1922, 1923, 1932, 1942 and 1943. He had ice cream on his birthday in 1942; the jail superintendent had sent him flowers. Bapu was on a fast on his birthday in 1924. This fast was kept for Hindu-Muslim unity.

Like the last birthday for Gandhiji, the last Diwali was also boring. He was appealing to everyone to maintain peace and harmony in Delhi on November 12, 1947, the day of Deepotsav. That day he was to go to Kurukshetra to meet the refugees, but he could not go there. On that Diwali day, he met some people at Birla House. Who all had come to meet Bapu?

For Mahatma Gandhi, October 2, 1947, his 78th birthday, proved to be the last. This was his first birthday after the country's independence. Lord Mountbatten and Lady Mountbatten were also among those who came to meet Gandhiji that day. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Home Minister Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad etc. also came to meet him. Brajkrishna Chandiwala, Manu sister and her doctor Dr. Sushila Nayyar, who lived with him like a shadow, were also in Birla House. Bapu's room was decorated by his colleague Miraben by writing a cross, the words 'Hey Ram' and 'Om'. The Father of the Nation was greeted by a steady stream of friends and well-wishers throughout the day, including people from other countries. Many of them expressed good wishes on behalf of the leaders of their respective countries.

I don't want to celebrate my birthday when such a huge fire is burning all around me, so either extinguish this fire, or pray that the Lord calls me to himself,' was what he said. He further said, 'I don't like the idea of celebrating another birthday when there is such chaos going on in India.' He came to Delhi from Kolkata on September 9, 1947. Since then the riots in Delhi were showing no sign of stopping. Paharganj, Kishanganj. Riots were happening in Karol Bagh, Daryaganj etc., humanity was dying.

Gandhiji had lost his will to live.

Hundreds of people kept coming to meet Gandhiji on 2 October 1947. Gandhiji has also written about that day whether it is congratulations or something else. There was a time when everyone believed everything I said, but today the situation is such that no one even listens to me. I have given up the desire to live any longer. I had once said that I would live to be 125 years old, but now I no longer wish to live much longer. Despite the turbulent atmosphere of Delhi, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs were coming to him that day.

In between, Bapu was saying that “India belongs to everyone. Everyone will live together here.” A foreign journalist came to meet him and asked why you had said that you wanted to live for 125 years. In response to this, Bapu said that now I have given up the desire to live longer. I had once said that I would live for 125 years, but now I no longer wish to live longer. He was very sad with the condition of the country in those days.
