नरक चतुर्दशी या छोटी दिवाली कार्तिक माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को मनाया जाता है. इसे नरक चौदस, रूप चौदस और रूप चतुर्दशी भी कहा जाता है. इस दिन यमराज के लिए दिए जलाए जाने का विधान है. माना जाता है कि छोटी दिवाली पर ऐसा करने से हर तरह का भय समाप्त हो जाता है और परिवार की अकाल मृत्यु नहीं होती है.

दिवाली का सप्ताह धनतेरस से शुरू हो जाता है. दिवाली से एक दिन पहले छोटी दिवाली मनाई जाती है. छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी के नाम से जाना जाता है. इस बार छोटी दिवाली या नरक चतुर्दशी 11 नवंबर यानी आज है. साथ ही बड़ी दिवाली का लक्ष्मी पूजन भी इसी दिन है. दिवाली के दिन माता लक्ष्मी और भगवान गणेश का पूजन किया जाता है. छोटी दिवाली के दिन यमराज की पूजा की जाती है.  

नरक चतुर्दशी को यम चतुर्दशी और रूप चतुर्दशी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. साथ ही इस पर्व को नरक चौदस के नाम से भी जाना जाता है. नरक चतुर्दशी या छोटी दिवाली पर शाम के वक्त घर में एक दीपक जलाया जाता है, जिसे यम दीपक के नाम से जाना जाता है. यमराज के लिए दीपक जलाने से अकाल मृत्यु टल जाती है. 

छोटी दिवाली 2023 शुभ मुहूर्त 

छोटी दिवाली या नरक चतुर्दशी इस बार 11 नवंबर यानी आज ही मनाई जाएगी. चतुर्दशी तिथि की शुरुआत 11 नवंबर को दोपहर 1 बजकर 57 मिनट से होगी और चतुर्दशी तिथि का समापन 12 नवंबर को दिन में 2 बजकर 44 मिनट पर होगा. इस दिन अभ्यांग स्नान मुहूर्त 12 नवंबर को सुबह 5 बजकर 28 मिनट से लेकर 6 बजकर 41 मिनट तक रहेगा. 

छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी क्यों कहा जाता है 

लोगों के मन में अक्सर ये सवाल उठता है कि आखिर छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी क्यों कहा जाता है तो आइए जानते हैं इसके पीछे का कारण. हिंदू मान्यता के मुताबिक, इस दिन भगवान विष्णु के अवतार श्रीकृष्ण ने राक्षस नरकासुर का वध किया था. नरकासुर के बंदी गृह में 16 हजार से ज्यादा महिलाएं कैद थीं, जिन्हें भगवान कृष्ण ने आजाद कराया था. तब से छोटी दिवाली को नरक चतुर्दशी के तौर पर मनाया जाता है.   

छोटी दिवाली पूजन विधि 

नरक चतुर्दशी या छोटी दिवाली के दिन रूप चौदस का भी त्योहार मनाया जाता है. इस दिन प्रातःकाल तिल का तेल लगा कर स्नान करने से भगवान कृष्ण रूप और सौन्दर्य प्रदान करते हैं. इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण, हनुमान जी, यमराज और मां काली के पूजन का विधान है. नरक चतुर्दशी के दिन ईशान कोण यानि उत्तर पूर्व दिशा में मुख करके पूजन करना चाहिए. पूजन मुहूर्त में एक चौकी पर पंचदेवों, श्रीगणेश, दुर्गा, शिव, विष्णु और सूर्यदेव की स्थापना करें. इसके बाद पंचदेवों का गंगा जल से स्नान करा कर, रोली या चंदन से तिलक करें. 

उन्हें धूप, दीप और फूल चढ़ा कर उनके आवहन मंत्रों का जाप करें. सभी देवों को जनेऊ, कलावा, वस्त्र और नैवेद्य अर्पित करने चाहिए. इसके बाद सभी देवों के मंत्रों और स्तुति का पाठ करें. पूजन का अंत आरती करके करना चाहिए. पूजन के बाद इस दिन यम दीपक जलाने का विधान है. आटे से बना हुआ चौमुखा दीपक बना कर घर के बाहर चौखट पर जलाया जाता है. इसके साथ ही छोटी दिवाली पर प्रदोष काल में दीपक जलाने से घर से दुख-दरिद्रता दूर हो जाती है.

The week of Diwali starts from Dhanteras. Chhoti Diwali is celebrated a day before Diwali. Chhoti Diwali is known as Narak Chaturdashi. This time Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi is on 11th November i.e. today. Also, Lakshmi Puja of Badi Diwali is also on this day. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped on the day of Diwali. Yamraj is worshiped on the day of Chhoti Diwali.

Narak Chaturdashi is also known as Yama Chaturdashi and Roop Chaturdashi. Besides, this festival is also known as Narak Chaudas. On Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali, a lamp is lit in the house in the evening, which is known as Yama Deepak. Lighting a lamp for Yamraj averts untimely death.

Chhoti Diwali 2023 auspicious time

Chhoti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi will be celebrated this time on 11th November i.e. today itself. Chaturdashi Tithi will start on November 11 at 1:57 pm and Chaturdashi Tithi will end on November 12 at 2:44 pm. On this day, Abhyang Snan Muhurat will be from 5.28 am to 6.41 am on 12th November.

Why is Chhoti Diwali called Narak Chaturdashi

This question often arises in the minds of people that why Chhoti Diwali is called Narak Chaturdashi, so let us know the reason behind it. According to Hindu belief, on this day Lord Krishna, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, killed the demon Narakasura. More than 16 thousand women were imprisoned in the prison house of Narakasura, who were freed by Lord Krishna. Since then Chhoti Diwali is celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi.

Chhoti Diwali puja method

The festival of Roop Chaudas is also celebrated on the day of Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali. Lord Krishna bestows beauty and grace by applying sesame oil and taking bath in the morning on this day. On this day, there is a tradition of worshiping Lord Krishna, Hanumanji, Yamraj and Maa Kali. On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, worship should be done facing north-east direction. During the puja time, establish Panchdevs, Shri Ganesh, Durga, Shiva, Vishnu and Suryadev at a post. After this, bathe the Panchadevs with Ganga water and apply tilak with roli or sandalwood.

Offer incense, lamp and flowers to them and chant their avahana mantras. Janeu, Kalava, clothes and naivedya should be offered to all the gods. After this, recite mantras and praises of all the gods. The worship should be ended by performing Aarti. After worship, there is a tradition of lighting Yama lamp on this day. A four-faced lamp made of flour is made and lit on the doorstep outside the house. Along with this, lighting a lamp during Pradosh period on Chhoti Diwali removes sorrow and poverty from the house.
