पूर्व भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम के कप्तान और कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता मोहम्मद अज़हरुद्दीन ने 31 अक्टूबर 2025 को राज्यपाल जिष्णु देव वर्मा के समक्ष मंत्री के रूप में शपथ ग्रहण की। इस शपथ ग्रहण समारोह में मुख्यमंत्री A Revanth Reddy सहित अन्य वरिष्ठ नेताओं ने भाग लिया। 

इस नियुक्ति के साथ तेलंगाना सरकार के मंत्रिमंडल की संख्या 16 हो गई है, जबकि विधि के अनुसार यह संख्या 18 तक हो सकती है। 
महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि अज़हरुद्दीन इस कदम के साथ तेलंगाना सरकार में पहली मुस्लिम मंत्री बने हैं।

शपथ ग्रहण से पहले अज़हरुद्दीन को राज्य सरकार द्वारा शासक के कोटे से विधान परिषद (MLC) के लिए नामांकित किया गया था। उन्हें मंत्रिमंडल में शामिल होने के छह माह के भीतर विधान सभा या विधान परिषद का सदस्य बनना होगा। 

प्रतिक्रिया व उम्मीदें
कांग्रेस ने कहा कि यह निर्णय सामाजिक न्याय के विस्तार और अल्पसंख्यक प्रतिनिधित्व की दिशा में महत्वपूर्ण कदम है। भाजपा ने इस पर कटाक्ष करते हुए कहा कि यह चुनावी रणनीति का हिस्सा है। 
राजनीतिक विश्लेषकों का मानना है कि अज़हरुद्दीन की नियुक्ति से न केवल सत्ता में मुस्लिम प्रतिनिधित्व बढ़ा है बल्कि कांग्रेस को हैदराबाद और उसके आसपास के जनादेश में लाभ मिल सकता है।

Former Indian cricket captain and senior Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister before Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on October 31, 2025. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and other senior leaders.

With this appointment, the number of ministers in the Telangana government has increased to 16, while the number can go up to 18 as per law.

Significantly, with this move, Azharuddin becomes the first Muslim minister in the Telangana government.

Mohammad Azharuddin previously contested the 2023 assembly elections as a candidate from the Jubilee Hills constituency and lost.
